BAMA/ SME members and Manufacturers Only Dinner is provided Get a behind the scenes look at the scientific testing techniques and instrumentation used in materials characterization (i.e. alloy identification), failure analysis, production lot testing and more. Highlights will be featured from our chemical, mechanical and non destructive testing history. Lodewijk van den Berg will recount his experiences on the 1985 STS-51B Space Shuttle Challenger mission for which he was a payload specialist, followed by a brief presentation and tour of our laboratory to shed some light on the sophisticated equipment used to evaluate materials ranging from household to aerospace applications. Living and Working in Space The conditions for living and working in the reduced gravity environment of space are obviously different from the normal 1-g earth conditions, and not necessarily more relaxed and pleasant. The design of experiments to be performed in space also needs to be adjusted to these conditions. This presentation should be considered as a basic introduction to the requirements to be expected for experimentation in space. A short explanation will be given of the Shuttle/Spacelab environment and of the experiments in which the speaker participated. A movie of his 1985 flight will be shown which will illustrate the unusual living conditions and the special experimental features. This will be followed by an open question and answer period.
